What is a Water Main?
A water main is the primary pipe that carries clean, treated water from the public water supply network to your property. In Lancashire, these pipes are maintained by United Utilities up to the boundary of your property. From the boundary stopcock to your internal plumbing, the supply pipe is your responsibility as the property owner.
Common Types of Water Main Pipes
Over the decades, water mains have been constructed from various materials, each with their own characteristics and lifespan:
Lead Pipes — Common in properties built before 1970. Lead pipes pose serious health risks as lead can leach into drinking water. If your property has a lead supply pipe, we strongly recommend replacement.
Iron Pipes — Cast iron and galvanised iron pipes were widely used from the 1950s to 1980s. These are prone to corrosion, rust, and eventual failure. Internal corrosion can also reduce water pressure and discolour water.
Copper Pipes — Used from the 1960s onwards. While durable, copper pipes can develop pinhole leaks over time, particularly in areas with aggressive water chemistry.
MDPE (Medium Density Polyethylene) — The modern standard. MDPE pipes are lightweight, flexible, corrosion-resistant, and have a lifespan of 50+ years. This is the material we use for all new installations and replacements.
